the new nostradamus
squints his studious eyes
to preview the future
of the planet he dwelt

barren land births no one -
only wandering eyes
with fleeting sly glances
and vacant wide spaces

the silken sea is full
with an ugly richness;
she waves her vagrant arms
of libertine deride

~

is this the eclipse that
thrusts a needless visit:
an unwelcome result
of our careless habits?

will the lands be arid?
shall the seas overflow?
will some global warming
triumph over us all?

or are we simply scared
of some struggle within
between having too much
and gaining too little?
