NO

Some days we awaken and know

that NO
is the appropriate answer
even as lips smile YES,
NO may be
the heart’s reply.

You may ask,
WHY?
And though an answer
may be forthcoming
the question may yet remain
hanging in midair, waiting
for a different response.

That’s when NO
just doesn’t really
answer the question.
