He keeps them in his freezer, this
Old man of many winters,
Eighty, exactly, if tract is kept
On a list of lifes increasing numbers.

A chronology of snowballs,
In counts of one...made from every storm,
That carried its load til it couldn't go on
And had dumped itself on his cabin lawn.

In warming May, he'll recall a verse,
A scene made up in Shakespeare *lines
Just as the sun does flatter with
Its glorious, golden eye, his hills
And meadows and mountain tops,
With reversed alchemical kiss;
Its face an oposite Midas touch
Will turn all it smiles on, green....

In a staggered line, just as they came,
On a warm spring day, he'll set them out
And thank his God for his reprieve,
As the world around him comes to life,
And he watches the list of winter snows
Slowly melt away.

(*See William Shakespeare- Sonnet #33-
Full many a glorious morning have I seen)

What a touching story. You told it with such grace and sensitivity. You portrayed the scenes so vividly that I could imagine myself there watching him ~ feeling him.

A fine write from your illustrious pen, Dear Ice!

But into my heart
It was not my lips you kissed
But my soul

written with finesse and grace

and the sun spins itself
into a golden stream
taking the snowballs on a joyride
for one last hurrah

*sighing*...quietly watching them melt, tasting the feel of eighty seasons of snowballs, embracing each and every one.
