Moved from a shack to a barn

0 posted 2005-03-21 09:59 PM

Circumstances, good or bad
Or, yet to be seen

Have found me here in this
Shotgun shack

Silent, now
And unnoticed in the world

Except for a view, askance

And the occasional “do you remember?”s
And the “what was his name?”s
That fill the most casual of conversations

Free, now
To curse the moon for shining
And the sun, for not

Freed, to rail against ignorance
And apathy, but quietly, always
Lest I reveal my own

The trees, in all their grace, are keeping secrets

Their roots, twined as they are
Like the limbs of lovers
Hold close, both stone and bone

Their branches, as arms held high in praise
Touch laced fingers in hallelujahs
Praying over the river

And the river, so sure of its destination
But, somewhat doubtful of the journey
Clings like a small child to the Heron’s leg

How I envy him, the Heron, his patience
Standing one-legged and aloof
His understanding of balance

And the owls, wide eyed and awake
Torment my nights with their incessant
And single minded inquiries

The very questions I ask myself

There are poets who are deep, and there are poets who are fully honest with themselves, about themselves....but rarely, so rarely, comes a poet who is both.

I'm lucky enough to share a name with one of them.

Nice work, Ed!

ssssssssshhhhhhhhhh...listen.

If you can't hear that, surely you feel it.

They pray for you.

Unnoticed? Never.

You, and your gently wise ways have been missed.

I hear that owl Q tune, and envy that sure-footed heron stance. It's always good therapy to listen to your heartbeat.

The pensive tone, the vivid visuals... I love the entire poem, but this in particular. Excellent!!

I have missed your writing, Eddie
so very much . . .

The trees breathe
your lifetime,
weaving stories to the river.

As she sways,
bulging from the weight.

Not unlike
your Heron,
understanding his balance,
The river passes
first one home, then another.

Crossing to tributary,
from lake to creek,
through county and state.

To pass by
each and every door.
If only to calm
the city streets,
as they cry into the night,
unnoticed.

See? You have to keep writing so I can glean inspiration from you  *grin*

Listen to your witch.
You, no matter what you do
or how hard you try,
could never ever be unnoticed.

All of this, then,
from the Quiet Man
who stands in shadows
eyeing all that passes by,
noting all with
discretion,
and
sincerity.
