Where love and doubt bear cross at heart - what will
Close the bleeding rift? For when Thou appeal
“Am I not Thy Queen, my Lord?” - What shall fill
Thy heart with naught but love’s own comfort seal?
For Thou art a Queen in this Lord’s true heart,
Though His not to own, possess, or demand;
For Thy heart is Thine; none may claim a part
No more than a King may the Sun command.
And if a Lord I be - it be a word
Not taken, until by Thine own lips proclaimed —
Until my heart’s true voice is earned and heard
By Thine — only then shall I stand thus named:
For a word precedes a deed, and in the twain
The truth shall lay and love shall find its reign.
