Last Love  .   Duet, with Elan

First love, first joy,
life opening into sweetness,
we died with the
first filling of two hearts  ~
such  wonder,  this  beginning,
with a single bonding instant
of boundless surmise,
yes, first love.....and yet....

....and yet...there is last love....

the love two hearts learn together
who have known all joys but one,
the unity of souls in mind's heart....

as first loves are unique
in their own surprising way
familiarity builds enigma
the  daily grinds us down, for
she still had starred eyes,
and his own wonder wandered

the continental drift,
dividing them like stone, never to mend
and they found themselves beached, apart.
Whether islands or a broken mainland
didn’t matter: the rocks were  worn ,
each lost hope in finding a last love,
in finding anything at all.

Rote pessimism tore stars away,
stayed the wandering
and stilled the voice of wonder.

yet, there is last love…

the love a spirit seeks
and a heart may find, but
only in another seeking spirit
and another heart
with one place missing

in the soul of the mind's heart

Not only did you two fine poets gift us with a fine piece of poetic writing, but the gist of this poem is so very true. I can identify with your words ~ and it brings tears to my eyes with the beauty and truth of them.
