Visiting Earth on a Guest Pass

0 posted 2005-03-15 01:18 AM

Vancouver Ferry

Twin gray tracks wedge back
across the dusk faded water,
they and the rows of bubbles
hold testament to our passage.

Cars stand dead in the lanes
as if the fear of drowning
held them checked like virgins
teleported to a brothel.

Their drivers mill or sit in them,
stoic or bored to a kind of stasis:
below decks, a ferry ride does not
singe the imagination or stir the soul.

Stories up we watch for whales,
wonder how we'll pass between
these channel islands, and whether
Vancouver is Hawaii blanched in ice.

So much we do not know of this,
our suntan southern wisdom irrelevant
along this flat surfaced passage;
on this inward sea no current shows.

It is not as it appears. The flows within
are only hiding, the water too level
while logs and orcas lurk the wet dark
awaiting blood or the incautious keel.

Those huge diesels are all we have
out here; the iron wall shakes to know.
Above, flat clouds brace for darkness,
drain color from the cold-eyed sound.

Thanks for taking me along on the Vancouver Ferry. I enjoyed the ride and the view!
You painted your experience so vividly that I felt as though I truly was there with you!

The imagery you used in this transported me to a very special place, and that my friend is truly a talent.  Very well done sir, Kudos.

Ed, thank you, for letting me travel once again along the inside passage, for gifting me a moment of re-call.

I like this a lot!

These lines for some reason struck me with memories of being on the sea:

"Those huge diesels are all we have
out here; the iron wall shakes to know."

Bit of a grim passage,
but enjoyed tagging along.

Very expressive my friend...words couldn't have painted a better picture than yours did here. Best a writer can do is have a reader see the reality of the words...and see it I did.

man oh man oh MAN... NO one does it better... NO one. You are the master of imagery... but you don't just give us vivid scenes... you take us there, open our eyes to things we don't usually see... and make us pray our eyes hold onto that talent.

This is superb... thank you for taking us with you!
