Apples tumbled out the bag,
rolling and bouncing across the counter top
in a rumble of green.

I dove to keep one from falling
to the floor but failed,
and it hit the marble tile with
a squishing thud, splitting nearly in half.

Sweet juice.
Sweet aroma.
Sweet mess on my floor.

Sweeter still, one memory that lingers . . .

Playful tugs on a floured apron string;
the pulling closer.
Steamy oven, at temperatures that sweat;
sweet as sugar.
Spicy looks.
Your cinnamon smile.
Forgetting directions with hands in soft dough;
delicious distractions!

Baking.
Oh Lord, the baking!

Could apples ever smell so good
when wrapped in all we touched, tasted
and measured;
and forgot to measure?
Could time stand still a little longer
while we baked like apple pie,
and filled the room, rich
with memories too thick
to wipe away...voices!

From the other room.

Voices.
Familiar as vows.

Tumbling green.

Familiar as broken apples.

Dang, Robert...what part of this poem
didn't exude taste, touch, smell, warmth, and smiles?

You brought it all home!

It's a !

Karilea - if I whisper, will you listen?  Keeping in mind, I must stand close...and keep my promises...

Brings to mind Magnus' little to-do over sticky buns...

Yes, Robert, I'll see what I can [ahem] cook up!

I love this poem!  I have two apple trees, but they won't fruit until summer.

This is definitely a poem to inhale... a treat for all the senses... and an invitation to memories. Excellent work! *S*
