Growing old no words he told as his chin gave silent nod
To skipping child his eyes arose waking wrinkled smile.

Always upon their greet, he’d play deceit,
pretending he didn’t care
But those silent nods and awakened eyes
Spoke, “I’m glad you’re finally here.”

With his cane they tugged their war; he powered down on gums
She twisted, pulled and gritted teeth, not loosing millimeter under thumbs.

When all was done and he’d won the war, he gave a little nod
Chewed a little Mail Pouch and winked at her
Unpocketed deck of cards;
HIGH LOW JACK and Game!
Without words, he gamed again!

Your grandpa sounds like he was quite a character. I have warm memories of mine as well.

I believe in your case, the acorn didn't fall far from the tree! You have a lot of his spirit!

I very much enjoyed this trip down memory lane with you. At the end I took a side trip of my own! Thank you!

Love & Light,
EA

Linda,
He was a character, but one of few words!  I remember one time when he was older and Mom wasn't around, I swiped a wad of his disgusting chewing tobacco to see who could spit the farthest!  And wouldn't you know it... he had way too much practice over me, so without a shadow of a doubt, I declared him the greatest!  You flatter me to suggest I might have a little of his spirit in me.  Not so much now, but I'll work on it!

I'm pleased this may have precipitated wandering memories.

Dixie,

You couldn't have said anything better to make my day.  I loved nursery rhymes when I was a kid.   Matter-of-fact, I still do!  Diddle Diddle Dumpling... (one of my favorites!)
    Have a great weekend!

Your Grandpa sounds like he was a fun guy! I love memories like these, full of family, innocence, and fun...

Plus, it reminded me of my grandpa, and he was the greatest. He always had a tooth pick in his mouth, a pencil behind his ear, a hat on his head, and a coffee in his hand. He was quiet, too... but full of life. Miss that guy! Thanks so much for the memories... they're some of my favorite!

Always, Alyssa

I barely knew my grandfather,
A pleasure to learn of yours
Through such enjoyable rhyme

iliana,
Thanks, Jo.  Grandpa said more with his nod than I could ever say with words.  I'm glad I captured a bit of him.  Have you written anything about him?  I'd love to read if you have.

GG,
Your grandfather sounds like a very interesting fellow.  There's something about a person who wears a pencil behind the ear that makes me think that person is prepared, not wasting a minute of life.  Your description paints a fascinating man.  Have you written a poem about him?
Thanks for commenting.  I love hearing the memories my poetry brings to you.

Professor Gloom,
It is unfortunate you barely knew him.  Perhaps, through others eyes and stories you've gained perception.  I'm glad you found the rhyme enjoyable.

Sunshine,
So glad you could meet him...  Thanks for the smileys.  Have a great day.  I know the sequel must be coming along fine.

inkedgoddess,
You could have flattered me no more.  I appreciate your response.  Happy writing to you.

My grandfathers were both gone before I arrived on the scene... and from what I've heard of one of them... well... let's just say I probably didn't miss much besides a few more scars. *S*

But this... this reminds me of what every child should have... memories that give smiles through the years... memories of moments when age has no greater importance than who has the greater spitting experience. *S*

I liked this very much!!!

suthern,
Sorry to hear this.  I've never understood why such misfortune occurs.
My agrian family was very close, but as interests and employment have gone beyond the farm, it seems like we become more distanced.  My grandparents lived with us when they became older.  I owe my love of arithmetic to my grandfather, who only had a third grade education.   He teased me into learning the multiplication tables.
Yes, I was very fortunate to have him live with us.  Thanks for your response.  I enjoy learning about my friends here.  Have a great weekend!

Every child should have such a grandfather.....

One of mine was....and one....murdered in an alley, and they never figured out which other drunk did it.....

What a delight - this gave me sweet memories of my grandpa and how he would always "pick" on us, pulling a tuft of hair or pinching an arm - and then when we'd pull or pinch back he's say "why you always pickin' on me?"

Oh such sweet thoughts - thank you dear friend -
