Before the sunrise lights the sky,
Before the snowflakes start to fly,
When waking workers just begin
To stir coffee cups of sugar and cream
Reminiscing on last night’s dream
Before dreading the reality they’re in;
The night walkers stumble around
Fearful of resting on the cold ground.

They are not just the poor homeless,
They are not hopeless or hapless,
They are the dark and tormented;
While others find abandoned building
Or grates with clouds of steam to sleep in
They must wander the night demented;
Avoiding any of the human sound
Feeling the evil oozing from the ground.

When day breaks with cleansing light
And shadowed fears fade from sight,
Sanity returns to tired faces,
They rejoice to snowflakes falling
Remain out though sleep is calling
Them to there resting places;
In these flakes white beauty is found
That can rest upon the cold ground.

heart wrenching poem...yet, well written
This just shouldn't be...should it?

Thank you, LeeJ,
What should and shouldn’t be
Oft times is not reality,
But these are so few, just one or two
Of those on the lowest rung
Where the pitiful are hung,
Yet it is what they choose to do.
I at times suffer insomnia,
They blend it with fine paranoia
Perhaps they should have a hospital stay,
But if applied would be turned away.

You masterfully brought your readers from the dark and into the light of day.
My heart aches for the plight of the homeless. On especially cold nights up here in Canada, I send up added prayers for them all. No one should be without a home. As a caring and resourceful society, we should be ashamed to allow this to happen. Those who have fallen on hard times, be they through circumstance or by having made poor decisions in life, they all should be helped ~ and helped to help themselves where possible.

Your poem stirred up some powerful emotions in me, Dear Professor! ~ and you are one fine writer. I always appreciate your observances on life and living.

Love & Light,
EA
