Square as a coffin’s lid, the silent hinged beast
stood before him.  He, the sentinel of the darkness,
messenger of the meandering and meaningless
cache of souls who awaited the slight
of sleep on silken snow.

It was then, that creak of a moment on the
floor’s crack, when waters dripped in the
cellar’s echo.  When the dank drear of
stifling air lightly tickled a wriggling
and wrinkled nose and a hand crept the
stair's crutch....slowly into the abyss of
that which could not be seen...or heard.

A shackled foot dangling over the precipice,
as leaden fright clutched the chain of fear,
and purple trails of terror coursed
a sinewed throb of stuttering shrieks...
as rivers clutched the virgin brow...
and a square but silent lid clung to
the cold hard clasp as one’s demise
damned the somber pillow
to eternal rest.

I have come back to this three times now.
It's intriguing...yet it frightens me.
Can you tell me from where this comes?
Awesome. hugs, Chris

Barry...this is a bit shrouded, but very well done.  Love the way the words sounded when read!

~ A mare of night in which one of your past lives was recalled, perchance?

Barry, you certainly know how to create a bone-chilling, knee-knocking atmosphere! Excellent write, Sir Poe-et!

Barry, I enjoyed your choice of words and the imagery.
They are stark to say the least!!!
I just hope I'll be in heaven before anyone picks up a shovel.
