Once upon a time
long long ago there lived
yes lived
a child who was real    not fancy
dwelling with imaginary friends
across the fields of green with the dogs
and later on the porch   bringing
the coyotes to the door   wagging

Oh   she was wild you see
torn from something I couldn’t name
but I feared it came from me
from the place where I held her
with nine times a month of troubles
in tears from the wrong turns
and smoke from a pipe I thought fit my state
filling the white room with her scrunched face
and a sound I had heard coming
from memories closet
where I kept the light on

She wanted to die she said
when she was only five and had barely begun herself
how could she know the meaning
of the word, death?

Could she see into the depth of me
past the lie of flowers on the table
into the wetting bed of every night
to be in a childhood
just like mine ?

I can still see the joy in her bounce
across the big highway at the light holding my hand
across the trestle to the sand
where the ocean fell into her lap
just like mine

Once upon a time
long long ago there lived
a child
-------------
In loving memory of Michelle

Thank you for this poem, Martie...it is a gift to everyone who will ever read it.

The woman now...ready
and lending
the hand to hold....

You know I know...
and how much I will in turn
hold the child's mother.

"She wanted to die she said
when she was only five and had barely begun herself
how could she know the meaning
of the word, death?"

close to the beginning and near the end, we tend to remember and to understand; it is in the vast wilderness of the unwritten middle that we often get confused.

A difficult write, I am sure.
An insightful read.

Martie, on this day out of all the days, and in this year out of all the years... I wish you peace. Peace, and a measure of joy, that is my wish for you. I wish that for you every day and every year, but today......

Though I didn't know her, I feel bits of her in your poetry.  She is lovely.  Thank you for sharing your heart, Martie.  I learn so much about tenderness and love from you.

gut wrenching Martie.

I believe and try to remember that we choose long before we are born to this life just how and when we leave it...

and we don't leave until we have served our purpose.
