(February, 2000)

The sun peeks through,
Cloud-drapes on sky windows
Onto someone cleaving
Sugar-maple blocks in twain,
And then in two-again, a fuel
That warms a person twice;
Once when split, again when lit
On latter winter nights.

Bending near the flower bed
Retrieving errant chips,
That landed on remains
Of summers (cemetery) colors;
Now all tomb-stone grey.
Where corpses still remain
Of twigs,with hints of red
Like frozen bloody stains
The legs of old begonias
Stand, like zombies, live but dead.

Reaching for the kindling;
Wonder gripped my eyes
A something, their was living
And its crooked finger tips
Were pushing up through frost;
Ghosts with gloves of pale chartreuse,
Had raised an inch above the mulch.

Fulfilling a forgotten promise
Said last autumn, resurrection
Shakes the memory, Jonquils
Stand, victorious soldiers
After war they fought with winter
That I thought they surely lost.

Jonquils are so lovely and fragrant. Their floral meaning is "Seeking Affection".

Like other flowers in the narcissus family, they have quite a stuggle (as you have so poetically described!) to break through the remnants of winter and into the light of Spring.

I enjoyed your poem and may the affection in your life blossom and grow each springtime!

Love & Light,
Linda

ice

I often get such inspiration from things of nature.  This was so uplifting that it sent me out to my garden to find some of my own.  Thank you!

Such incredible images... such a great reminder of hope... and beauty after the dreariest days. *S*

I think Jonquils are one of the most beautiful flowers.

OMG, I absolutely love this write!
Into my library, with some of my favorite treasures. thank you so much for this beautiful piece.
I can see those little darlings poking their heads through the damp earth's face right now, and even smell the aroma!
Excellent imagery write, Ford.
