I know... I know... I'm late. *S* I have no excuses... but lots of reasons. *S*

I remember valentines
When decorated boxes
Adorned every desk
And paper hearts
Cut with all the precision
Small hands could muster
Wore almost as much
Glue and glitter
As the proud creator.

There was always one
More special than the others
A loving prize of beauty
If only to believing eyes,
Assembled with greatest care.
That one was yours.

Long before I knew you
I dreamed of our meeting
Thinking you’d see me
And you’d know love.
But years destroyed dreams
And the remnants of me
Were left worn and tattered,
Forgotten as a faded valentine.

I shared with sunsets
The silent wishes
That dawn would not
Cast her blush upon me
And find me still alone.
I walked a path
Polished smooth
By constant shuffle
Of feet that dared not stumble.
I stayed in motion
But went nowhere.

Then I learned that miracles
Weren’t just myth or mirage
For I met you
And embraced love
And lived the definition of
blessed

How could we have known
That joy was just a visitor
Never unpacking its bags?
Shouldn’t happiness be shield
Against mortality?
How is it I still breathe
When forever proved so brief?

Now decorated boxes
Of cherished mementos
Are crushed
Against a heaving chest.
All that glitters
Are the tears of mourning
As loss cruelly cuts
My heart into tiny pieces
I remember.

"...saved the best 'til last..."

Yes...that applies here. This is beautiful, Laura....heart-rending, but beautiful......and I'm glad I could give the first reply.

You just wrote how I feel most of the time hon.  This is a lovely piece, worthy of being late.     Hugs.

Belle, your talent is showing ~ as well as your loving and vulnerable heart...

Any man should be out of his cotton-pickin' gourd with joy to have you as his
Valentine!

You truly are special, Ruth. You truly are!

Hugs with much love,
Your friend,
Linda xo

Suthern beloved one, if I wrote half as well as you I would be happy, but whatever I CAN read your beauty and I ever shall see beauty whenever and every time I look at something you’ve written.
I love it utterly, utterly, utterly.

Heartbreakingly beautiful, I can feel this, which of course is why you are such a good writer

Joy just a visitor?  I think not...
Lovely, suthern!   I ache with you, realizing that joy has made its track in those neural pathways.  It is marked within...

Glad you posted this, late or not!  Enjoyed.

Ratleader: You also gave me a smile just when it was needed most. *S* Thank you so very much, my friend! *S*

Enchantress: Thank you, sweet lady... It was written "in time"... but by the time I got home Monday night, I lacked the energy to beg my computer for an online session. *S*

GS: I know that cycle so well it should be my mailing address. *S* Thank you so much... and I wish you better days. *S*

EA: May I tell him you said so??? LOL Such sayings make me think you've got a bit of the south in you. *S* Thank you so much, my friend...

Marsha: Then you should be ecstatic... for you leave me eating your dust! LOL Thank you so much, my friend...

PS: It was almost never... for I hated posting something that was obviously late. *S* Thank you very much! *S*

LeeJ: Ah, lady... you've made my day... I thank you so much! *S*

garysgirl: Thank you so much, sweet lady... I hope you and your love had a wonderful Valentines Day... close in heart and thought, even if miles lay between you. *S*

JM: They'd have to fireproof the walls... and print cards that wouldn't incinerate just sitting there... or maybe the sobbing ones would keep the place damp enough? LOL Thank you so much...

Ericc: Thank you so much, kind sir! *S*

JL: Thank you very much!!! *S*

latearrival: I know how that is... there's just not enough time for all the poetry, is there? *S* Thank you so very much!

miscellanea: You're right. *S* I'm definitely one of those who believe it's better to have loved and lost than not loved at all... for though loss can be so painful breath is merely a burden... the memories do last and give comfort... I'd sure hate to have my memory closet barren... knowing I'd never really lived. *S* Thank you! *S*
