Visiting Earth on a Guest Pass

On the Day Of Lovers

It was the day of lovers when we got the call:
Come home -- fly home -- now.
It was morning, our time, but mid-day there,
the silly cards exchanged and all the flowers given
when her voice thinned for a moment, stopped
mid-sentence, and she fell at the guests’ feet.

It didn’t take long. The surgeon did all he could do
and tried all the things he couldn’t,
veins bypassed to other veins, the showers of drugs,
and at the last the shocks, and shocks, and shocks,
but she was gone before our airplane left the ground.

A lovers’ holiday, and she was love. It’s still her day
but never do we smile then, never celebrate
with lacy cards and candy kisses, happy visits;
and the flowers...oh yes, there are the flowers,
the flowers that do not cheer and fond embraces
lingering, never long enough to warm the stone.

It is even more difficult when our loved ones pass on special days of the year ~ Christmas, Easter ~ and Valentine's Day. I lost my 18 year old nephew on St. Patrick's Day and I have never celebrated that day the same way since...

You wrote this poem with such love and soulful remembrance.

Sending you an extra warm Valentine's Day hug,

Linda

Valentine's Day is not a happy day for many.  I hope the memories of her love make it easier.   ....jo

How touching, Ed.  I understand...

Valentine's Day will soon be over and a new day will come.

Poignant and bittersweet...a day of honoring love, a day of loss.

What a beautiful, touching tribute... that last verse makes me hurt for you... and for all who knew and loved her.

Good God, Ed - I just told this to James in another post - that I have seen more death than life and this is truth and that death is nothing in which I fear for myself because it is much more difficult for the living.  The spirit travels to sweet release and we must go on living.  That, to me, is courage.
