It lay on the street
this symbol of love
a single red rose
broken and crushed

I picked it up
and petals
cascaded from
my hand

All that was left
was the thorny stem
a few leaves
and one red petal

Sadly I held it
wondering whose love
was shattered
and broken
with the tossing
of the rose

Maybe...
it slipped from a bundle of dozen,
even a baker's dozen...
in the hurried rush to reach a love...

maybe, it was just lost...
among the rush to hurry steps...

Yes, there is a sense of sadness in a flower on the floor, but it had its moment of glory when it was deemed beautiful enough to be chosen for someone ...

Profound.

Love, Margherita

Most people would just walk on by and never have given it a thought. Only one with an observant eye and a poetic soul could have written this poem.

awww...I would have done the same and wondered the same...

Tomorrow I leave one rose with a poem..I hope  someone doesn't leave it there so long that the petals drop off

Have a wonderful Day tomorrow

Thank you for reading!! I'm very interested in the different views of why the rose was left on the ground.

aww . . . you see from so many perpsectives, this made me think not only of what ensued with the tossing of the rose, but how many would be grateful to even receive a rose.

Beautiful, Sharon

Maybe it wasn't tossed... maybe it was placed there carefully... in that one spot where their eyes connected... when they knew that they'd found THE ONE...
But the rushing crowds crush their commemoration...
And maybe the scent of those crushed petals makes another pause... and connect with loving eyes...
And... can you tell I live in a fantasy world? *G*

Beautiful write, dear lady... hope you don't mind the speculations. *G*
