I felt a pain as her words issued
She spoke of her family, about to appear
‘they’re simply trash, human garbage
lowest of low, worthless I fear”

Gasping at the harshness there
In her voice, usually sweet
I wondered if she viewed me as
So much refuse under her feet

All life is shaped by many things
A past, a parent an ordeal
Though some may seem less than others
They still have the ability to feel

Stories of babies in dumpsters
Of children left alone at night
So much ‘garbage’ to someone
But God knows it’s not right

Even those lowly born among us
Should be given some simple respect
Isn’t that what we were taught
Isn’t that what God would expect?

Oh yes, she is a Christian
Twice a week in God’s good house
Preaching love and brotherhood
To her small child and her spouse

But hearing the venom she spewed
With hatred toward her kin
I pray that God forgives her
For her intolerant sin

**

The meter's off, the rhyme is forced but please believe that the FEELING is real. I heard a coworker say that her family is nothing but 'human garbage' and I wanted to cry. I had to explain my quiet mood to others as they questioned me about why I was so silent today. I was sad because this woman talked like this and ashamed of myself for not speaking up.

oh Hugs Sharon, there are those who wish they had families while others take what they have for granted.  It took courage to write this and work through the emotion,
and you executed it beautifully.  Hugs.

I noticed nothing amiss in the writing as I read this, I found only heart and compassion shining upon the page in the words - beautiful thoughts and feelings here - we are all worth a great ransom in God's eyes -

Thank you. I was stunned to hear this girl say these words and am truly embarrassed that I didn't speak up - but then I would have cried while trying to get my point across. If it happens again, I just may take an assertive route and let her have it!!

Thanks for reading....

You showed as much class in not speaking up as she showed no class in her words. There are plenty of harshly judgemental people who claim something resembling faith yet act like this and worse.

It's all about dignity, about allowing everyone to stand erect. Well said.

Sad part is we really can't be responsible for how others act or feel about anything really.  We can however ask that if they are going to speak that way, that they don't do it around us. It is a good thing we can control are our own feelings, and comments and by them knowing we were offended they may take a look at themselves. (hopefully)

Poet Devine, Dear person, You can not flog yourself for not speaking up.I have been there, and found that speaking while feeling so upset,I sometimes said the wrong thing. You might have only put oil on the fire. It certainly was not the right time to confront her.It takes a lot of love and patience to really find out the rest of the story. And if anything said after that, best done in private. best to you, marty

Poet Devine, Just thought about the English show on T.V. Keeping Up Appearances. We all laugh at her antics while she is trying to hide her relationship to her sisters and father, the so called poor relations. If you have ever seen it I hope it gives you a chuckle. You did nothing wrong. And actually did right by sending off this story so the rest of us can give it thought. best marty
