Five hundred fingertips
trail the upward of my spine
five thousand years of glimpse
through the frames
one at a time
as though my life were "this"
(it is)
as though my life were "that"
(it was)
as though I could find what I am
would I could be organized
and plastic pages keep me there
in the places where we are
and "now" does not exist at all
and clouds are figures ten miles tall
like macy day parade balloons.

Five
I wiggle pinky pink
four is more appropriate
as thumbs don't count as fingertip
always hitching rides they are
the party on the hand
I am
begging for a reprimand
hopping in the truck
for laughs
"take me where you go"

I sit
and toss the sandal off
the foot
and place it on the dash--
with the window down in half
grinning in the winds of change
asking do you mind if I
smoke as I exhale the stuff
of satisfaction game.

"Whatcha haulin'?"
finally
I make the small talk properly
nodding to the back.
"You don't need to know" he said
and I knew the weight of that
as he played propriety
against his need for company
on the road of spark.

Sparks
the vision on the side
they rumble when you drift away
edging as a warning code
thump thump thump
the road is game
lost and tossed
we laugh too strange
righted
on the road, we came

too close to being gone.

LOL, ok, which one first? the trip on the German autobahn, or the one in southern Yugoslavia? They are a lot more interesting than the ones about hitchiking in Alaska at -30F.
And if Larry C reads this? NO! I will not retell for the fourth time about that camel incident. LOL

wrong answer
LOL, the Yugo story is really much hotter.

I left the train in southern Yugoslavia after leaving Greece, decided to hitch, as it was really early in the morning, right after sunlight, I figured...what the hell. Not the best idea. The Adriatic coastline is, well, scary, and we had just left the top of the scariest ridge I'd ever been on, and headed toward what appeared to be a farming area.
Anyway, got picked up by a single man in a ?Volvo? and a few minutes later, he picked up another lady...a Yugoslavian street walker, I soon found myself by the side of the road as he and the other lady went about their busyness, parked under a tree. So, I started walking. Then three young village boys ran up to me, grabbed my backpack and started running. there goes my passport and travelers checks! not to mention my clothes.
I chased after them, and they kept waving me to follow. I ended up spending the whole day at a Serb village, no one speaking English of course, but I had a great time and met the entire village before they flagged down the ONLY passing bus of the day (around sunset) to the first real city.*sigh*

OK, so next time the autobahn but I don't want to hijack this thread!

first of all this stanza struck me so much as in geez, just life, y'know?

the road is game
lost and tossed
we laugh too strange
righted
on the road, we came

reminded me of the Dark Side of the Moon, I have no idea why.

Ok, once my girlfriends and I hitchhiked and some dude, we were like 14, picked us all up and LMAO, before this my girlfriend had picked up her mother's umbrella from my house that she left there.  You know the big 'ole Mary Poppins black ones with the long pointed tips on 'em.

Anyhow, he starts driving way the heck out of where we were suppossed to be going and my friend is in the front seat, two of us in the back and this scum puts his hand on her knee whispering God knows what to her. He was like in his thirties, sheesh.
So I start freakin out in the back seat, saying, "Pull over, pull the ******* car over NOW" and he isnt listening so my girlfriend, OMG it's actually funny, takes that damn umbrella point and pokes that sucker as hard as she can you know where and we all scramble out of the car maybe 20 miles from home and just run.

Dumb kids.  Needless to say, that is the last time I hitchhiked.  A much different world when I was growing up.

Maybe not as interesting, but taught me a lesson.  Dylan knew it best:
(Don't need the weatherman to know which way the wind blows)

Sooo . . .  the moral of this story?

Ya just never know when you are going to need that umbrella.

*grin*

OMG I just read Kacy's LMAO ---> sorry, only that m'dear would happen to you.

kinda reminds me of the time I failed my philosophy exam and went for a drive...I ended up picking up a very nice-looking hitch-hiker on the interstate and we ended up talking about philosophy and life, and we hit it off so well, I drove him all the way to the French Quarter where we had a cup of double chocolate coffee at some shop on Royal Street...or maybe it was Canal...I can't remember...

never saw him again, though he did call a few times afterwards...

It was a different time then, eh?

But thanks for playing along, and I just KNOW there's more stories out there.

Hugs to all.
