Where no tyranny is tolerable

Number Thirty-one

I'm cruising the sidewalks on coalfax Avenue.
I'm riding
a new kind of motorized chair.
If I lean backwards it accelerates.
If I lean forward,
It slows, stops and starts rolling backwards.
If I lean to the right
it turns left,
and if I lean to the left it turns right.

Then I'm at some big ADA assembly
Where there are maybe thousands of people.
My legs are encased
in a huge steel apparatus
very bulky, heavy steel braces.
A speaker announces from the podium
that I am number thirty-one on the presenting list.
and bills me as an amazing disabled person,
which is called an ADP.
and I both hear her and can't hear her at the same time.
I am relieved that I am number thirty-one to speak.
because I don't want anything to do
with this program.
There may be time to get out of this freak show
before they get to me.
Then they play the National Anthem.
I try to stand up,
because that's what you're supposed to do
when they play it.
but I fall clumsily back into the chair.
Then the program is over.
A woman sitting to me left
turns to me and says,
in a withering tone
reserved for talking to the "handicapped:
WEHAVETOGONOW.
I feel a wave of panic.
I can't even walk ...
How am I going to do anything? ...
What if everyone forgets me and leaves? ...

I am outside again,
riding in the slow-speed left-right chair.
Tom from school is with me.
Tom has never seen me in this way,
and I try to explain to him what happened.
We walk and/or roll into a clinic.
Then a nurse, for no apparent reason,
yells out: NO! ... YOU'LL RUIN THE BATTERY ...
I'm still having trouble
explaining this to Tom,
so the nurse comes out.
She explains that what I have,
She says it is called compound diastuza.
She doesn't elaborate on what this is.
She doesn't have to.

Then I awake and feel for my leg.
It is still there.
Nothing has happened.
Everything is fine.

Hi, Jaime! I was pleasantly surprised to see my name in the title of your post.

Yes, actually I am considered a "wonderful" nurse. I cannot imagine not being one! That is why I went into the profession! To be kind and loving to those in need.

You have such vivid dreams and you make them sound so real with your descriptive imagery and portrayal of emotions.

If I were a dream analyst, I would think by this dream that you feel burdened and tied down in life ~ but remember, my fried. You have a mighty spirit and a creative mind and are able to fly hight and free whenever and wherever you choose to! I'll join you!

Hugs with love and admiration for who you are and what you accomplish in spite of all the challenges you have,

Linda xo

Jaime

Yes, she is a wonderful angel too!  Your poem was very scary, and I hope just a dream.

Hey amigo Jaime, is the weather forcing you to stay indoors?
Earth Angel is right, you always soar above the restraints.
