When wasteful war shall statues overturn*
and profiteers plow back its molten shares
into the stocks piled higher than what burned
the time is nigh, examine their affairs

When god’s invoked as though he would condone
the carnage manufactured in his name
at that point what was right has been disowned
and since we know we too must wear the shame

When flaming hate is fanned by flapping flags
and tribal screeds leave room for no debate
it’s time to bite the fingers that they wag
and question who exactly is the State?

What’s come to pass is not as you’d have thought it
They lied, folks die, it’s broken and you bought it

*I can only take credit for 13 of these lines.
The title line is from Shakespeare’s sonnet
“Not Marble Nor The Gilded Monuments”

A very well done Sonnet Richard, powerful in it's meaning. I enjoy the words you share..

I absolutely LOVE your couplet. Effective, dramatic, and humorous-everything a couplet should be.  War is hell, and sometimes people have to walk through hell.  But doing it for any reason other than utmost necessity is ludicrous.

I am going to hunt down a book if I can find it, and sent you some things in email Richard, that will not suprise you one bit.

Excellent work - all of it so profound and meaningful.

Shakespeare is nodding his head,
pleased that one line
could inspire such...

even though it be a sad and weary fact...
