You came with the moonlight
When the silvery disc
Peered into its reflection in the sea

You were still and silent
When the moon rose high
Casting your shadow beside me

The sky was of the deepest blue
Peppered with golden stars
The waves chased the moonbeams to the shore

I enjoined you to look around
And see how the beach sparkled
Under the moonlit sky

You merely muttered something
I did not hear
And stared pensively at the sea

Until now I still think
Of that perfect moonlit night
But somehow 'tis not as perfect, though

For time has made me realize
The silvery moon could never be
More beautiful than your shadow.

Come read to me some poem,
Some simple and heartfelt lay,
That shall soothe this restless feeling
And banish the thoughts of day.
