Don’t Tell the Sun

Don’t tell the sun that it is winter.
Let it dry to brittle
the wood stacked for the hearth,
seep into the shiver of my curling flannel,
open across the carpet where the dog lolls
bleached and sighing.

Tomorrow,
or next week in drizzle
will be time enough to mention cold
and to watch the breath of it capture words,
to layer the fleece around a love
until just a peek of eye and nose are exposed.

Tomorrow,
we’ll sit all toasty with bare feet open to flame
crackling into the room
with the green plants all gay and greenly windowed
and a concerto melting into the hot soup.

Don’t tell the sun that it is winter
for there is still time for cold ham and tomatoes,
green olives that bite
and picnic tables at last dry of summer’s wine
with swim-dipped friends,

there will be time for hot tea and mittens
tomorrow.

December in Southern California can have some of the most beautiful weather...it has been that way this year, so far...eighty degrees today...just beautiful enough to repost this poem from January 2002.  Happy Holidays everyone!

"there will be time for hot tea and mittens
tomorrow."

Yes, tomorrow, the first day of Winter.
This is lovely Martie..
especially when we are freezing in just above zero temps.
Send some of that beautiful warm ocean air this way.

Happy holidays to you and yours sweet lady~

Well Chris may have the frightful weather back east, but it was sure a balmy day here in Vancouver again, hardly going to be a white Christmas up here either so we are heading up tomorrow to get into the winter wonderfuland of it up in the mountains.

Beautiful write Martie, and I won't say a word I promise

Wah!  I need to be living in Southern Ca.  But then again - hmmmm, earthquakes?  Course we've got the active Volcano here - so what the heck - shake me some sunshine

Enjoyed this delightful write -

I was about to post a poem, but I think I shall let it linger awhile, and let yours float to the top, because, well, just because, I do....

and you know very well, what I mean.

some things just have to fly....

maybe I'll post in 10.

I was there the other day, drenched in buckets of sunshine,  only to enter back into the fog in Bakey!

This isn't working for me, but your poem surely shined the way it is.

Merry Christmas to you and yours, sweet Martie.

Strive for this! It's there and you can find it. If you capture one moment of it that somehow slipped between the sofa cushions of life, that's all you need.

There are even blue skies in ORegon this year, Martie, it is the driest fall I can remember.  Happy Holidays to you as well.  Ken

Today we got the tractor stuck twice shoveling about 12 inches of snow and ice (one day's worth)--Barely could pull it out with the Jeep, the only car of three that would make it over the mounds of snow!  Eighty degrees you say?   Grinning at the idea!

A beautiful poem, content and form..:-)
The word "tomorrow" is repeated in perfect places...
The sun here, knows that it is winter, and hides most of the time from it, above gray,wool-blanket clouds...

We have also had some of the coldest days in years! There was a day last month when the snow went down to 1000 feet - virtually unheard of! And it gets pretty cold at night event though it is warm in the day...

all the same I really liked this poem, it has a cozy feel to it and your imagery is outstanding.

and I am wondering where in socal you live.....
