I used to protect my edges
religiously.
Gathering pieces
eroded and damaged.
Trying so hard to make them meld.
Desperate not to lose too much of myself
in this process we call life.
Collecting fragments
clutching jagged lines of a yesterday me.
Holding on to what used to be.

Today I smile at the beauty of my outline.
Tracing the shadow of who I have become.
Knowing each broken, cracked corner
shows the character of a survivor,
and the memories of those things I miss about myself.
Realizing missing is okay because I can
learn from the colors of each new day.

I know you think you left me broken.
But it really was just a check on a long list
of misguided trust
A transitional thing if you will.
Now I am back to what is important.
I tap my foot and I dance when no one is looking.
I sing at the top of my lungs and
I no longer have to worry about making you happy.
Which turns out to be an impossible thing
closeting as you do, even from yourself.

Now, the jagged edges have been smoothed
by my own hand.
I am grateful for the chance
to concentrate on the ones capable
of giving as well as receiving.
The ones that don’t bath in their own tears
demanding someone sooth their fears.

I am free, and happy with the pieces of myself
that are sometimes rough, sometimes smooth
but always there to show that I am unfinished.
A collage of yesterday, today and future me
and those pieces meld perfectly.

encouraging for some of us out here, still wearing the chains of our oppressors, though we are making strides daily to reclaim who we once were

applause and a dozen roses for your inspiration this afternoon dear susan poet

Susan I sincerely love this---you dared to expose the vulnerable while emphasing I'm learning from the experience to arrive at "hey I'm cool!" *S*

Susan

Superb.

I have actually starting playing the old Simon and Garfunkel tapes but I blend them with the Flying Pickets.

So very well expressed - 'tis words of courage and valor -

If I wasn't so beat, I'd quote each line that I thought rocked (there were lots)...

A lot of factors worked together to make this (I think) one of your best writes.  (Though, ya know I'd of cut out at least half the words...lol).

It's good to see ya back to being happy you...
