Stinging air still catches my every breath.
A feeling so long craved, now satisfied.
In morning's precious silence and solitude,
I begin my search where nature so cleverly
Hides her precious footsteps away.

Marvelous wintered walks of coons, cats,
Rabbits, bears, or other beasts that soon
Melt into this bespangled gelid icy lace,
Too early to be warmed by any reluctant sun.

In an eye’s wink, a tiny bird flies overhead
Dropping a dollop on my shoulder.
She knew her actions would catch my eye.
Softly landing on a single branch.
A tiny chickadee, all alone and lost.

She seems to rest on a path going nowhere.
Ah, now I see she was offering
Me her tiny sacrifice, perhaps her prayer?
She and I both know all too soon
Wild cats with empty domestic bellies
Come scavenging the crumbs of the weary.

In this silent solitude, no song.
Her neck curves in surrender under a wing.
Perhaps sleep entices her body
To forget her shiver long enough to pray,
Thereby giving her eternal peace?

Tears of sadness blur partially closed eyes
Guarded by sticking lashes iced in grief.
Like this tiny bird suspended in time,
I feel myself counting pauses of breath
Inside feeling the tick and tock of
Murmurs of my mind that soon
Will turn to a deadly tomb of ice.

A blanket of softest white begins to fall,
Covering a once tiny joyful sound of life.
Through tears I place this downy sorrow
Inside the pocket closest to my heart.

In my naturally unbalanced kitchen
Where breath is dry, but always so alive,
A tiny bird has again taken flight.
Dipping to pick up a muffin crumbs,
Or sip from an angel serenity fountain
Filled with life's sustenance.

Warming rays entice her to a sill
At the window of recollection.
In excitement she hurries
Her tiny wee wings in such a flutter
Along the edges of a nearby mirror.

I smile in the knowing that we both wait
For the warm winter sun's touch
To lick the frost away from our bones,
Melting the bars of our cage to freedom.

Soon an unlatched window will be her path.
I wonder if she will remember me?
For she danced on my hand
While I felt the shiver of her life
Reverberating within my very soul.
That day her tiny sacrifice
Left its footprint on my heart.

Hi Sharon ... what a wonder Mother Nature is and how delightful that she sent a tiny chickadee to visit and rest on your hand.

I loved the poem. You are a magnificent writer.

I wanted to write something for Brenda, my daughter-in-love, and seeing she loves the birds so much, I felt this one should naturally belong to her.  Her own touch is as soft as the feathers of a chickadee, and her hearts sings a song of joy just as uplifting each and every day.  We are so blessed this family.  Thank you for reading.

Tell someone you know how special they are today too perhaps?

Hey that "dollop" is supposed to be good luck in many cultures. This reminded me of a Pittsburgh winter when a "we" kept a pair of cardinals fed outside our apartment window. The pictures are way cool.

Richard, I heard strange customs about animal unine of late too, doesn't mean I want to try it!  I saw my very first cardinal in Cape Cod, and am still in awe of those birds.  LOL, good to see you here, and thanks for sharing.

I envy you....chicadee is just about my favorite bird, but I've never been lucky enough to befriend one.....

This poem says as much about the writer as about the subject....both beautiful.

You are all so darn nice to put up with my scribbles.  I am so fortunate in my lifetime to have a wonderful family and friends, and truly wish the same blessings on everyone.  I treasure both, and keep you all close to my heart.

Now as for Sy, coming close you say?  Now here I  thought I was the girl of your dreams.

The best love poem I have read in months, and I read a lot of poetry...

It is heartfelt words such as these that restore my faith in humanity when it starts to be lost...

Thank you Sharon.

Ford, there are all kinds of love isn't there?  We as a human race, just have to be more in tune with how to share it and all will be well.  Thanks for the read, and the compliment, it is appreciated.

Awwwwwwww ... well you know I love this don't you? From the adorable pictures, through to the beautiful words. What a lovely and endearing poem Sharon.

That looks like a little Black-Capped Chickadee from what I can tell. Their range covers Alaska, Canada and the northern half of the U.S. We've got quite a few here, and I just adore them. Their little song is so cute ... chick-a-dee-dee-dee.

We just changed out our feeder about a half an hour ago this morning, from a smaller one to a bigger one, and it looks very different. The birds are all hovering through the apple tree and doing fly-bys, trying to get the courage up to try out the new feeder. I've been outside watching them, and the chickadees keep coming close, but none are yet brave enough to land and try it. I'll bet one of the little nuthatches will be the first, lol.

Loved this, truly!

Best wishes and big hugs,
/Kit

Yes that wee man is a chickadee, and there are tons in the pine tree next door to me.  The poor things are really having trouble finding food in all this snow here. Every single morning I have a entire assembly of all kinds of birds waiting on the school fence for me to show up with their breakfast of bagels, breadcrumbs, cereal, crackers, apples, and whatever else I can scrounge up for them to eat.  DARN Seagulls try to grab it all as do the crows, but now I make it all smaller so some is left behind for the wee folk.

Hope everyone is remembering to feed them?  Poor things! They will find anything you drop if they can see it.  The radio is suggesting everyone feed them in some fashion but the darn bears here are all confused, and haven't gone to hibernate.  Believe it or not, they are up in trees trying to eat out of birdfeeders,so it is a catch-22 thing going on here, LOL.

Oh, sorry rambling on here, thanks for visiting and reading this one.
