The journey back was still
But for the wipers on the old truck
Slapping a rhythm against the bottom
Of the windshield as they would change directions
Rise to wipe away the drops that fell
And start again
The downward swipe
Keeping time like a clock without hands
Only miles that crept along growing gloom
Of tree lined roads.

She sat and stared out the passenger window
Until we hit Manes and I stopped to buy gas
Just as the clouds decided they had held enough
And decided to let it all fall at once

The square roof over the pumps didn’t stop the wind
And she opened her door with a jerk
As it was ripped from her hand
Threatening the hinges with broken knees as they hit the stop
And gave with a spring

She ran in and I leaned into the sail of the door
To close it while the pump ran its circles round and round
Counting pennies into dollars and dollars to gallons.

When we were both back inside the cab
She spoke…

“Find a place we can sit and talk” she said

I just nodded my head, turned the key
And tried to remember a place not far ahead
Where I could turn and find that spot the upper Marmot
Ran under a single lane of dirt

She slid over to me then
as we started down the blacktop
and I felt the warm of her hip against my own
and her head touch my arm as she leaned
into the sigh that escaped her lips

The upper Marmot is typical of the hills
Small in summer she rises to rage in spring
Or when it might accidentally rain enough the old trees
That line her steep flanks can’t hold the run off
Today she raged

In a brown frothy flood that took the space I planned to park
So we drove on a ways where I found an old barn
That looked as sad as a mourner at their best friends funeral
And parked up against the side that faced a field
Rather than the now muddy dirt road we had been on

“The Lady Blue,” she began
“ has here strings wrapped around your heart.”

I began to speak but she put two fingers against my lips
And continued

“Do you think you could ever care half as much about someone else?”

I smiled then started to answer but she again just put a finger to my lips
And said “Shhhh”

“I’m not through yet, and when I am, I don’t know if I can stand the answers
you may make me hear.”

“I’ll listen with my heart you know, not just my ears and I already know
that what you are and what you’ve been is something I may never understand.”

“But… here goes”

and she drew a deep breath that made her breast rise and tug at the buttons

“I’m not perfect, you know.”
“I never said I was, and there are things about me you too may never know”
“still, I am going to tell you that something in me moves
when I watch you write and see how your eyes catch the sun
across a quicksilver bed of ripples or how you speak to me and I find
I am lost in the places you describe, the way they feel and how so many times
Things inside just seemed to die.”

“My question stands you know,” she sighed
“for if you could care for me half as much as you do for the Lady Blue
and those like her you have wed yourself to.”

“I’d stay, if you’d have me”

I couldn’t find words to describe the way the old leather pages called to me
So that I might with a pen write the things inside and try to explain
Try to show the colors
              how they change

All I could do, was nod and watch her eyes
as she sighed an unsure breath

Then kissed me
A low growling kind of kiss that met trembles of skin
That defeated buttons and cloth
Leaving us bare to the summer storms

I’ve wondered if she regrets that day
Or ever will

But I know
The Lady Blue still runs deep along the banks near Cody’s
and the roots of trees cling to banks along her lengths
but they all threaten to fall
Should in the end
The rage of her currents
End it all

.....Damn!!!

Oooh gawd noooo....not this way...
someone hand me a kleenex please.

If this were a movie I would not want the house lights to come on at the moment,
but I would rather prefer to sit in this dark and remember....

yes, you CAN write

"and I felt the warm of her hip against my own
and her head touch my arm as she leaned
into the sigh that escaped her lips"

and make your readers feel~~~

Gee, next time a fair warning of a alert would be wonderful.  What an ending.

Now that truly was a very well written and heartfelt story, well done sir.

thanks all...
really though..no need for kleenex... hell, we all make choices and we all know that fairy tales are truly written by the brother Grimm...

  happy holidays!

I'll be back one of these days I'm sure with another tall tale or two...

Peace....

Oh I have no doubt you'll have another story to tell...

your own words promise it.....

But I know
The Lady Blue still runs deep along the banks

and as long as the river runs...there will words flowing from inside of you.
(and hopefully film in me camera)

yeah yeah....I KNOW...

Oh my - sigh - I melt into your words - and the ending - perfect -

Happiness isn't something that happens to you, it's created from within you.  Joy is a state of mind.
