Daisy chains and lemonade
passing notes of secret code
tangled toss of legs
engraved
in clover where the stadium
was painted on a sign
"to be"

I watched the sun pass through her hair
wondering if she knew that
it captured honey liquidless
telling time that tells too much.

"sssssshhhhhhhhh,
the bell's about to ring"

she wondered how I always knew

not knowing that her eyes wrote rhyme
how in the morning, sparkled dew
(as though an elf in merriment)
and how the layers of her tress
warned me of the sun's duress
passing days away...

"I guess -"

I was so uncomfortable,
telling her how close I watched--
the way her lip would curl up slight
and how she held my fingers tight
when we passed the gossip crew

I guess I am in love with you

words I never said, instead
I offered her a buttercup,
asking if she told the truth

laughing when she sneezed

I knew

that I might never know.

yanno, I can see you with one of those familiar  buttercups

like offering a pat of soft buttery sunlight
