Words From Across the Sea

I have many requests none of which will come true,
a nephew across the seas.
Sent picture of sand and the empty, behind
one truck, one tent in the view.

Was over there once, just a year ago,
a medic reserved is he.
Got word while his mother, my sister lay ill,
a reprieve was allowed for she.

For his father, my brother-in-law a tough one that month,
a wife lost and then son to go.
The emptiness feels like a well with no end
but he sent us his words, feelings show:

"Happy holidays to all my friends and family.
Hope this mail finds you well and safe.
Thanks to all for your love and support to me,
my brothers and father during these past many months.
Only due to this caring, can we endure without mom.
To many of you I have lost contact with, I apologize.
Please send this message to whom you can.
There are many I do not have addresses to.

This photo was taken a few days ago
in the desert while resting during a convoy.
In your travels, thank a veteran for their service to our country.
No matter how you feel about the war, you are living in freedom
ONLY due to the people willing and physically able to provide it.
That's my gift to you.
God bless America, its troops & coalition forces."

I'm speechless... unable to do anything but send hugs to you and your sister's family... and keep you all in my prayers.

Oh, Maureen, I just don't know what to say,
except that my thoughts and prayers are still
with you....and the rest of your family, too.
Tell your nephew thank you, too, for me.
Heart hugs to you all,
Ethel
