it's christmas time and here I am
dreaming of home from some foreign land
nothing is real, nothing is fake
it's all a bad dream I can't shake
forgotten and missed, broken and fixed
righteous and sheltered, though nothing fits
I've got commando greens and they fit real nice
protecting me from dark wintry nights
and the army blues in my closet to wear
when the world becomes right and fair
but who knows when that day will come
so at night I stay awake, well past one
with people walking by talking each day
english and spanish and every kinda way
how I miss home and the joys that it brings
the meals on the table and the songs we sing
the family together with laughter and cheer
no one left out, no anger, no fear
but here I am in a foreign land
fighting for freedom one inch from deaths hand
always wondering who will be the next to go
my friend, my boss, or some poor joe
the occupation of killing takes it's own toll
hopefully I'll leave soon before santa gives coal
but I wake up and do it because it keeps me sane
so maybe, just maybe, my life won't be in vain
it's hard to feel the difference between hope and defeat
trapped inside the things I need to keep me on my feet
but maybe one day I'll get passed the lack of shoes
and happy I'm in commando greens and faithful army blues

You aren't forgotten soldier. Or disrespected by those who would prefer you here.

If you are writing this from lst person, you are surely not being missed, and thought about every day, along with your comrades.

If you wrote this for every soldier, good for you!  I can't imagine the agony of being away from home at Christmas, and the respect I have for the military who keep our homeland safe is not surpassed by anything.

Merry Christmas,

wow thanks you guys. I appreciate it.  I actually was thinking back from when I was over there last year.  I'm home now and I might be out by spring break so its looking really good for me.  I have so many poems and ideas and even words to share.  it's been such a wonderful past couple years since I last posted here that it's a complete difference, to me, to read some of my old poems and see the change.  well, take care.

Thank you for what doing what you've done.

And thank you for this poem, too.
It reminds me not only to think of the people out there, but also to try to appreciate that, however ard it is for us to get along, I can spend the holidays with my family. At my house.

Great writing, glad to see you are back home and safe...my Godson/nephew is "over there" for now on a second tour of duty as a medic in the reserves.

Have a wonderful holiday season~

Welcome back, poet. You've written a piece of  every soldier's heart with this. For no matter which side they fight for, most would rather be home with loved ones.
Welcome back, hope you keep penning and sharing your thoughts.
