it was innocent enough
just the rain and the window
with a neon tavern sign
and a fireplace in the corner

a couple of glasses
of an "it is ok" wine
and he left in a hurry
before you started crying

and then there was time
too much for people like us
and that song I played
in search of another

you said it was lovely
and did I know it was yours
like some other song was mine
but the lonely in your eyes

was the same kind
and just a dance or two
was not quite warm enough
to keep us through the night

but there are other ways
