* My thanks to suthern for the discussion, inspiration and how to sing without knowing all the words.

Depression is a cancer
Its subtle, slow and scary
It creeps behind insidious
To capture the unwary

It steals away the music
And stops the heart from singing
Replacing it with clanging bells
Which never cease their ringing

It keeps the senses muffled
And wrapped in strangling cotton
Where part time plans all disappear
Long gone and all forgotten

It holds the mind in statis
No forward and no gaining
Till everything is bound and gagged
And speaking takes some straining

It covers and it smothers
All joy is held in stalling
And in the darkness something grows
That causes caterwauling

It overshadows in the dark
For to the night its suited
Then with its silence it can kill
To make all singing muted

But there’s hope in your speaking
If changes you are bringing
So fight depression with your voice
The choice is in your singing

Sing a song of faith and joy
And sing it out with feeling
Before you know it you will find
The song has brought you healing

Here in the midst of my lonely abyss, a single joy I find...your presence in my mind.  Unknown

Midnightsun, thanks for your response. You may do whatever you like with it. It's now in the public domain

Enchantress, thank you for stopping by and for your encouragement.

MGROVES, if you've been there and now are now you can join with me in shouting halleluhah

Here in the midst of my lonely abyss, a single joy I find...your presence in my mind.  Unknown

My eyes started leaking before I finished reading the title... for I knew. *S*

You've written such a beautiful tapestry of poetry, struggle and wisdom... and given a heartsong that will live on in quiet notes of hope even if a throat cannot cooperate. *S*

And with the tears, there is pride... for I know your path... and from learning to crawl again, you now dance... and I'm so very glad to know you and your strength *S*
