Kindling

My neighbor watched.
Despite the dark that from a house
looks out when daylight,
the placement of her chair was such
that let me notice.
At first I guessed, "It's just the sound
the axe makes when with each stroke
I break the quiet of her thoughts."
Slowly, though, as work progressed
from splitting heavy rounds of oak
into lengths compatible with my wood stove
to the softer touch of hatchet use
when making kindling,
she seemed to glance up from her book
more often.

So she likes the softer sounds
that the warm will make...

you probably reminded her
of someone fair...

Bob,

There really is only one way to tell for sure...you are going to have to send me a pic of you doing such a chore and let me decide....

Nice job!
