The King and Queen conferred, then said
“It’s time the princess should be wed!”
With kingdom as her legacy
The King issued royal decree
That all prospects must pass one test
To prove to all he is the best
So knights, nobles and peasants all
Assembled in the early fall.
“The one who holds the lady’s hand
Will share the throne for this vast land
So reverence is due this child
She must not ever be defiled
By one whose quest is less than love.
Before all men and God above
Convince the lady you’ll be true
And this kingdom will come to you.”
One by one, the suitors each tried
To win the princess for his bride
Till finally, there were just three –
Knight, singer, man of poetry.
The knight stepped forth with words sincere
For he did hold the princess dear
"If you will accept my affection
I’ll offer a knights protection
My sword and shield I’ll wield for you
That you may know my heart is true."

But still the princess sat waiting
Wanting more, anticipating
The musician stepped up to try
With voice so sweet it teared the eye
"I’ll give you such a melody
One voice will produce harmony
I’ll sing of what you mean to me
Bare all my dreams to scrutiny."

But still princess remained unmoved
“Step up, poet!” the King behooved
"M’lady, I’ve not much to give
Just heart and words, long as I live
And when words cease, as words must do
My last will be these – I love you."

Hush fell over the anxious crowd
Till princess spoke, voice ringing loud
“My people, I have made my choice
This poet with his strong clear voice
Is one I choose as my husband
To love me and to rule this land.”

For many miles, a cheer did ring
Now in that land, the poet’s king.

Absolutely enchanting - my girls are going to listen to this on the weekend.  Don't tell, but as they can't read yet, I find neat stuff to read them and put it inside a dumb book to read them at bedtime (sneaky huh?)

Just dropping back to tease!  Our compliments led to grief recently? We wouldn't want that!  Perhaps we didn't give that what is due!!!  This is a marvelous write with a happy ending.

A pleasure to read!

Lady Laura, thou'rt truly wise and thy verse, though couched in the guise of wit, striketh deep.

...and it's a nifty read!

This is a wonderful story and very well told.  We all wish a few more poets would rule!  Thanks for sharing your thoughts.  Ken

PS I'm glad you enjoyed "Grandparents."  I was especially heartened to see that you still hold that Ma Maw in regard for what she was, and not for what she wasn't.  Sounds like you've some wisdom too.
