in the shadows

Your arms trembling,
your legs so long,
your eyes so pale pale grey,
had I known then
what I know now,
could I still have slipped away?

I live in moments,
briefly,
in between the times that men should live,
without a single word to share
the endless broken dreams
frustrated lee shore screams,
but I always chose my way
and paid the fare.

You lived in moments
finely tuned,
you walked as if the stars
held still for you,
shining lights
as blessings from a far
leaving any bills for someone else to hold;
you gave your dreams volition
as if they were
the substance of all life;
though your arms felt warm
your blood ran cold,
you were gears and wheels and steel,
your thoughts though soft
cut like knives,
selling ecstasy as brief
visions blinding mind and soul,
wounds narrow,
depth beyond belief;
beauty as well
just a tool for you,
sacrificed offerings without sorrow,
flowers at the gates of Hell.

"flowers at the gates of Hell"

Oh, I know those flowers.  I didn't get close enough in the beginning to see the thorns, so in the end I got pricked (no pun intended).

  always love to read you Icy!

yes, it is so sad that sometimes we miss the thorn because we are so taken by the beauty.  Very well done icebox...hugs.

"had I known then

could I still have slipped away?"

You do what I do so often, ask questions that only you can answer. That is what reflection is for, and one of the reasons to write poetry.

Me, I tend to do the opposite....I ask a question that anybody but me can see the answer to, and then agonize over the implications of my being unable to solve it....
