Between the Lines

My trying gets the best of me
as I walk behind myself
picking up the pieces
with "eyes of rain" leaking out
their want.

False smiles
of yesterday hopes and dreams invade,
pressing emotions to the fore,
listening to the silence of your words
wondering the cost of it all.

No illusions, do I have,
body heat warning me, false fevers
to keep me from the pleasures of life.

Yet I love each day that arrives,
mornings to stretch the imagination
and nights to put them into dream action.

And I wait, because I know
that somewhere, someone
is listening.
