walking the surreal

lines are etched upon your face
and hair once chestnut now flows gray
your shoulders,
they bend--
from the weight of years
pulled forward
      by the futility
           of fighting gravity

your walk—
it is more of a shuffle
and you often cannot hear
but I see the light that shines in eyes
that knew youth without fear

that wandered cross miles of unknown land
mapped trails that left each wrinkle there
loved more than mortal man can bear
gifting you with that snow white hair

your heart
        was wounded
              and sometimes broken

your soul so weary—
each step alone
was bathed
in a hundred shed tears

but still . . .

you stood brave and resolute
and opened your arms to all those near
shifting the sands of other lands
by simply your being here

by simply

being here –

Note - I work in an office where we see many elderly people - they each have a story and were not always old - funny - when I see them, I can see the years melt away and stories unfold of youth, vitality, passion and pain - just makes me think

Happiness isn't something that happens to you, it's created from within you.  Joy is a state of mind.

I'm getting up there - although I don't realize it that much until I look in the mirror and see my Grandmother looking back at me.

Love the way you take an observation and put it into such a lovely poem.

You need never wear glasses. Your vision is already 20/20! ~ Besides, you see with more than your eyes!

Warm hugs to you, Special Susan!

they are so overlooked most of the time or just condescended to or thought of as not even mattering, sad, how they are treated and then stuffed into nursing homes, left to wither, god this is sad, but you've given them the humanity they deserve after a life lived

To be old—
Now amid the swirling snow
I understand:
No one comes to visit me;
There is no place to go.

time steals the youth
but leaves behind
an entrance
to new day birth

Thank you, my dear poet friends - your compliments and kind replies warm my heart and I give to you all my deepest regard in return -

I love to sit and talk with the elderly and hear what their youth was like - like reading a good book -

Hugs - Susan
