The Unicorn Stays

My cabin in the woods
offers much solace.
My weekend home
away from home,
where my solitude
is well appreciated.

I purchased
this little place
about two years ago.
A messy divorce
had left me depressed
and lonely…
hardly fit company
for myself,
let alone others.

It came partially furnished
and I had fun selling
that which I didn’t want,
and re-decorating
to my own shabby-chic taste.

One item I kept
and I didn’t know why,
was a picture in the bedroom.
It was of a unicorn
and a sprite…bucket in hand,
standing on opposite sides
of a crystal pool,
that was settled within
a vibrant forest
of trees and
low lying flowers.

Were they friends
or enemies,
seeking water rights
within a mythical setting?
Where they real
or legend?

I have painted stories
in my mind about them,
as I have seen them before me
superimposed on a canvas
by an imaginative
and unknown artist.

For generations,
since the dawn
of history…
the unicorn has existed
in the minds of many.
Millions of words
spoken, and equally
as many written,
and thousands
upon thousands
of pictures produced.
Each picture is a
figment of the
artist’s imagination…
for the unicorn
is sight unseen.

China,
about 26th century BC,
honored the unicorn
crowned it as
King of the land animal.

With Greek legend
we experience the
reasoning behind and
for the Horn of Plenty.

Middle Ages
a European fantasy
along with dragons
and wizards and knights
in shining armor.
Yet few doubted
their existence.

It represented purity,
cleanliness and honesty.
The horn possessed,
supposedly curative power
and the mystical creature
could only be captured
by one who was a virgin.

On medieval tapestry
the unicorn represented
the clarity of an unseen Christ.

I eventually came across
what I needed to find.
No more information
did I need for keeping
this work of art
hanging upon my wall.
I had found the reason
and housed it
within my soul.

For generations,
since the dawn
of history…
God has existed,
in the minds of many.
Millions of words
spoken, and equally
as many written,
and thousands
upon thousands
of pictures produced,
of His Son
and the Virgin Mother.
Each picture is naught
but figment of the artist’s
imagination…
for the God
of our understanding,
the Virgin and Christ Child
are sight unseen.

This picture,
I have opted to keep,
this work of art
has helped me find
that which was lost
to adult disbelief…
the restoration
of my childhood faith
is indeed a blessing.

The reality is...
unseen does not mean
non-existent.

The unicorn stays.

I literally let out a little gasp when I saw your name! I honestly have been missing you and your delightful poetry ~ and spirit!

A wonderful write you have penned! ~ The message, the imagery, the reality and the fantasy...

It was also informative about my friends ~ the unicorns! lol

You also shared some of "you" with the reader. Sounds as though you have come through some difficult times ~ but with a SPIRIT as strong as yours, you can weather anything that comes your way.

Warm, welcome-back hugs,
EA

Thank you - purely fictional my preference is to write in the 'first person'. I appreciate you all reading my ramblings.
