Dear Anne Marie,
The days are long
without you by my side.
The enemy draws closer now
and fear is hard to hide.
Our squad lost three good men last night.
I still can hear their cries
and see the wounds etched in my mind
each time I close my eyes.

Dear Anne Marie I’m trying hard
to be all I can be,
but darling I want so to be
more than your memory.
I want to lay down next to you,
to gently stroke your skin
and feel our growing baby as
he kicks you from within.
I try to picture how you look
with pregnancy’s pink glow
and dream of tracing contours changed
from those I used to know.
They often say that war is hell
and I’ll admit that’s true,
but even worse is being here
so far away from you.

I’ll brave this war and I’ll come home
to see our child, I promise.
Take care of you. I miss you so.
Your ever loving,
Thomas

Oh.. *tears*
Wow, thank you for sharing these pieces. I remember what it is like when your husband is away with the military. This hit home hard..

This is so tenderly done in rhyme...
not easy to do well in letter and story form... So good to find your name here Hootie-girl.

when you walked into the room it felt like time was standing still.
and I felt fascination...then my heart gave me away.

Beautifully done Ruth...you have said it so
well.  I fought the hardship of being away
for many a day...out of contact with the
outside world for about 9 weeks...Such was
the life of a sailor under the surface of
the ocean.  I was fortunate that I did not
have to endure the additional hardship of
losing a friend to enemy fire...or have that
fear with me 24/7 like they do.  Keeping or
trying to achieve peace can be a very
arduous task.

Thank you for writing this,  it is so real.

Oh my Ruth, the ache in this really goes to our heart.  Beautifully done, I am waiting to put them all together, then will do a Christmas read at the senior's home this year (giving you credit of course!)  They loved Kit and Balladeer's Widow's Walk last year.  Thanks so much for taking on the challenge alone.  Men - where are they when you need them right?
