These pages will age beyond yellow,
flake like green leaves do at rust,
names now tattooed in fonts’ mellow
shall join all that lived in the dust

‘tis the daughters of erstwhile “flappers”,
some sons from the breadline’s queue
the last of the old bootstrappers,
these that “passed” who I now review

In memories of teens, toddlers, infants
they’ll fade gray-white-evanesce
like antique films’ silver’d prints
time’s indifferent, opaque coalesce

then from somber to indistinct, mute
go Maw Maw, GrandPap’s reflections,
no one’s to blame or impute
just times’ detached view of affections

But we say now good-bye to an era
those born ‘mid roaring Depression
these durable stoics who’d wear a
patch, lose no pride on inspection

Fare-thee-wells recede to a past
that advances with more of the same
the play stays but most of the cast
strip the marquee of obsolete names

So Good-bye middle named  Louise
(trailing Minerva-, Isabel-, Aline- )
bon voyage Beatrice, Sophie,
Alice Jean, Robbie Geraldine

God speed Fannie T, Mattie Bee,
Flossie, Clara Eugenia,
Della B, Polly Jo, Ethel Lee
Anibal, Bessie, Edna Helena

Adieu Winnie Sue and Cornelia,
(first born of Neely and Mabel)
Odessa, Edna, Ofelia
Wilma, Odile, and Hazel

Salutations to Mildred Marie
(joins her timeless tot  Kittie Lee)
Edna, and Beda (preceeded by Goree)
Ola Fay ( by her Grady Lee)

Valedictions to Lola Maria
Lora Lucile, Lillian Idella,
Lillie Belle, Lallie Ann and Idalia
Ola Mae, Addie Mae, Dorothy Della

Vaya con Dios, Alva, Vera,
Violet, Victoria Henrietta,
Winifred, Eleanor, Veda
Evelyn, Oaksie and Lahoma

So long Harwood, Elmo, Earl John,
Lonnie, Lindley, Larvell, Barney Lynn
Leland, Elmer, Nolan, Alvie Leon
Roosevelt, Columbus and Vernon

What caught me, as much as any tribute
to those who have passed on, was the
variety of names, different than we
know today.  Their names speak as much
for their times, as anything else.

Well done, Sir.

You can write of anything!

A very novel write!  Yes, you brought names and history back to life, if for only a moment.  Enjoyed.

I lived in Houston for a bit a few years back and I have family that have decided to live in the hills of Kentucky so I very much enjoyed this post from you as the names sound somewhat familiar.  A heritage gone for some but maybe also a rebirth into generations for others.  A treat to read and brought a smile as well.
