Stone Soup

I wish I could bring you some stone soup, Mama,
like the kind we used to make a week before Thanksgiving.
And afterwards, we’d take long afternoon naps
in the room that gets the most sun,
with the cats curled up around us.

You need some of that soup now, Mama.
I wish I could bring you some,
but they won’t let you have anything
but Jello and clear broth.
Besides, I can’t comfort you won’t let me.
I know you don’t want your kids seeing you like this,
smaller and older than a week ago.

I can picture the ten pounds you’ve dropped,
imagine the pain tight around your chest,
plain there in your eyes;
hear prayers whispered
from dry lips.

Not being allowed to hold your hand
or just to watch you sleep,
now that’s just wrong Mama.

That’s just wrong.

Corinne,  when I first read the words "stone
soup"  I thought of a story in a 3rd grade
reading book...perhaps second grade.  And
then I read further...and discovered a very
warm, though sad expression that is very
touching to me.

Thanx for the share.

Corinne, my friend...

Stone soup means something to me, as well.  All came and shared something small...and before they knew it, a feast had been had on little to nothing at all.

Corinne, congratulations for making something special of something wrong...for understanding in that special way children have for their parents...words that go unspoken, just a nod, and we are...to know...

and know this, my friend...

with warmest hearthugs...you know I am your friend...

Just wrong...yes

I've always loved the notion of stone soup. Maybe, when I can no longer make my way, I'll just wander around with a clean smooth stone in my pocket

All the best, Cor

Corinne

I know Stone Soup from my teaching days...is a lovely story.   So sad, the situation with your mother.

Thank you Martie! I think she's out of the woods now, at least that's how it sounds today. A long recovery period ahead of her, though.

Take care,

Corinne

This aches and hurts a cry.

Marvelous writing from you always Corinne.

I hope your mum is ok.

ms C...the path through the woods
always seems to return
for our feet to venture

pack some of your soup
for that treck again
but know you know the path

and that it heals the soul

felt you in this one
