Burning bridges behind us

we leap into the fire’s belly

as if we’ve been doomed to forget
how much it destroys the forest
and all that lives within.

Some say these fires also rebuild,
but most do not,
and the critters both high and low
in their hearts know
more is destroyed than saved.

And if you think this is about trees,
then you haven’t seen the forest
without those proverbial filtering
Polaroid shades
that hide much of the glare that is there.

I prefer to look at it for what it is.
Hell on Earth,
though I don’t personally ascribe
to the theories
of Heaven or Hell.

But if Hell exists?
Then we’re already there,
having been completely consumed
by the flames of hatred
spewed by all who believe
they own the keys to Heaven.

You are one very wise lady.

Wonderful verse that is,  on so many levels.

I especially liked your ending Kacy.
Only a fool believes he holds the keys.

You capture the irony beautifully as you do the lived truths of what we are all part of....powerful writing.....~P

"...But if Hell exists?
Then we’re already there,
having been completely consumed
by the flames of hatred
spewed by all who believe
they own the keys to Heaven...."

Being-as-we-are,
living the heavens and hells
in this wide-awake dream-
between belief and non-belief
can we bridge the gap between
...only in this moment.....~P

within and without-
