Today I walk with grandfatherly ghosts, following footsteps from long ago

I delve into the paper trail wonder of who I am,
from whence I cometh and genealogically explore
the roots of my soulful Spirit, so deeply entwined
in the land where my grandfather lay his footprints

Drury … the roots run deep in the seep of history
long before this life, as I now know it, came to be
How many ancestors ?How many hardships traversed
so that we might come to this ancestral well
to drink abundantly of wisdom, with gratitude

Drury … an ancient Lincolnshire name – 1066 A.D.
surfaces in England … coming by way of France
arriving in Florida in the 1700’s , living under Spanish rule
eking out an existence in the new frontier

Rebelling under the granting of land by the ruling party
some of the Drury clan heads northerly
Searching for that elusive pot of gold
they are sure lies at the end of the rainbow of promise

Searching beyond the boundaries of Florida
The Drury’s come upon a Mecca of territory
located in what will come to be known
as Georgia in the coming years

Forward, forward … fast the flip of history pages
finds many Drury marriages
one of which begins the chain of my Americanized heritage
In Camden County, Georgia in 1888

Alexander Drury marries Gertrude Walker
Giving birth to Catherine, Hattie Mae, James Bailey
Johnny, Maggie, Elizabeth, Jasper, Gussie, Earnest and Idell
My grandfather, James Bailey Drury married Lula Mae Strickland
From this blessing came an abundance of children
which included my mother, Beverly Willene Drury

At a very young age, my mother met and married
Mitchell C. Cowart of Spartanburg, South Carolina
giving five children to this birth land of Florida
where the married couple now resided

I have much to be thankful for
This heritage history trail is far from complete
I still have much root digging to do
in the celebration of who I am today

In all, it is a rich heritage, full of mystery,
memories, and the ever-growing need-to-know
My strong Spiritual pull will keep me focused
on the trail of my ancestors
until, like they have done, I reach the end of the roots
I pray that I will have left a bed-crumb path
for the generations behind me to follow
In their own seek of who they are

~James Fisk, a gold speculator, when asked what had happened to his fortune,
at a Congressional investigation into the Commodity Market crash of 1869 replied,
"Gone where the woodbine twineth."

Dear Marge:

This is a fascinating record of your background. I enjoyed it very much!. About 5 years ago a cousin of mine in Canada decided to trace our paternal family tree. She is still working on it, but has given me so much information. My ancestors too, came from France in the 1700's. Good luck on the rest of your search!

Love

Not bread-crumbs, dear sis, but words...poems and poems of lovely words!

Friends~
You all are so wonderful ... thank you for letting me share~

This piece began many months ago ... and I wanted to say a special 'thank you' to a certain gentleman who previewed it in it's early stage for me ... you know who you are ... and I love you for your helpful suggestions~

I have many miles to go beneath the roots ... but am enjoying the research~
There will be more ... later~
