Echo: (Greek Mythology) A nymph whose unrequited love for Narcissus caused her to pine away until nothing but her voice remained

The echo of this poet’s voice
lingers deep in wooded glen
Words of love, of hope, of joy
foretell what would have been

Silenced by the love not taken
she wipes her teary cheeks
Afraid to sing the name of love
to name the one she seeks

If unsaid words could echo
would love shine upon his face
Or would she see him turn away
deny her heart’s loving grace

We will never know the truth
from the one she would adore
Only the echo of her heart is heard
because the poet speaks no more

Oh, this is heart rending and sad - and yet, beautifully rendered - I love this little tidbit about Echo - did not know that -

Enjoyed -

Ah such a wonderful story Sharon..
I'm going to have to brush up on my Greek Mythology.
'Echo'...very very nicely done.

Wow!

I'm very intrigued by this

Only the echo of her heart is heard
because the poet speaks no more

It sets my mind to wondering.

Thank you for the re-post

Oh, damn - I see myself there ... through the tears, that is.  Sad but good.

Thank you all for reading. Since I lost all my poetry on my hard drive after the last hurricane, I've been delving into the Archives here to copy my work. This is one of my favorites.

You remind me why I say certain things... They may not be well received... but the echo of the unsaid never quite stops reverberating through thoughts of "might have been"...

Beautiful work!!!

This might well be anyone's favorite.  Well done!  KJ
