In the air is chilled despair,
Yet the smells drift far at night,
When fewer are the car fumes,
Locations are fragrance light,
Stench or cheep perfume

The bad food is what is good
Because the bad is trashed in plenty,
He prefers the worst restaurant
Since good ones don't have any
And leaves his desires to want.

There are no flowers that can overpower
That which rots in the alleyway
But to him it smells so sweet
Sun roasted from yesterday
Trash is taken just once a week.

Henry watches keen for that oily sheen
The oozes from the cans in rain
Along the cracks of the concrete
Dulling last week’s blood stain
That mar the walk and city street.

He knows to go to the source of flow
One of many in the inner city;
Hearing the banging of the can
Sees a girl none too pretty
Rather plain or maybe just bland.

In a quick scurry seen she doesn’t hurry
She just watches as Henry runs by
To investigate the newest meal,
Giving off the weakest of sighs
As he nibbles a potato peal.

He wonders the thought that seeing him has brought,
Perhaps jealous of his freedom
As she turns back to her drudgery
In the kitchen where work is never done
In the toiling of reality.

Freedom or curse, it could be worse,
Into what life has Henry been cast,
What reason for this incarnation,
So very different from the last,
Will living be the explanation?

You've taken on a fine subject, to see
life through the eyes of a rat...

cast into a way of life not his own choosing,
yes?

Excellent word play, Professor.

Thank you, Sunshine,
Always nice to have praise from such a fine poet as yourself
