So long, so long, on my back
I’ve carried past cares, happiness,
till what was strong now weak and frail
must lie as dead bedridden.

The backbone of all that I am
has drifted apart from the wheels
that motivate me up and beyond
the accepted and stringent confines
imposed on all of mankind

And underneath a ceiling
stark white and of no interest
I stare from within at love
and know out there it’s the same
as the ceiling above my head.

The book on my right unread
speaks of extreme ignorance
and curtains drawn on the sun
complete my assessment of love.

Oh, to be up looking down
equipped with the power of time
to redirect each little movement
and keep love’s backbone intact
but love like me suffers dis-ease
and is forced to retreat and heal.

Pills have their way; I could get up today,
but maturity brings to the fold
the knowledge to wait and suffer
till love has grown nimble and quick,
jumps like a fox over disinterest,
and enlightens the poor and ignorant
to the beautiful light and healing power
contained in the eyes of love.

To those who stare with disinterest,
refuse to read signs, and remain in the dark,
perhaps it’s better that way
till someone above looking down
decides the who, when, and where,
and jumpstarts your heart
from out of the past
into a brand new start!
