For November 11th,

Poppies make me remember
but I'd rather forget
how one can lose a son
cause he got bored on the farm
decided to get killed on foreign soil
in return for a tin plaque a dusty medal
one stands so far removed
from past sweat and toil of yesteryear
hardly a person drops a lonely tear
poppy fields grow as ever before
but fewer don the symbol on lapels
indifferent as time passes, you can tell
to busy to react to an unwitnessed event
people are selfish down to the core
cadets no longer write notes in reams
they used to account for passed dreams
lose a lover, lose a son
the poppy allowed one to retain
how they got bored on the farm
then were conscribed
townspeople imbibed
a drink for brave cadets on rations
a farce of a duty to serve a nation
where everybody cares only for themselves
as the enemy mixed well with the victor
to escape trial
create a new identity
up to moments of identity theft
something to do for obituaries
and marked as a fatality, you see

Times have changed so.

I remember the small silk squares of stars
in windows,
denoting the number of children
gone to serve their country.

It is a different world.

One has to go on with living, appreciate what we have but also one has to take into perspective that all that loss of life for the 'love of country' when the country really couldn't care less as long as there are enough at home to keep the economy rolling and the war machine in shape...it all has to be reunderstood. So much of what we learn anyway about who to emulate and reveer is fictional too.

Martin,
You have once again spoke for many people
of how they feel.
I aplaude you for it.

:-)

Within this heart you'll find love
