The Wind

It's almost Christmas
I've completed my gift list
now I sit back and watch the frost
as it shines in the moonlight
and Stan Getz is playing for me
I'm feeling a little lost
but warm for the melody
and looking over postcards
from some long past season
sipping ancient brandy
and remembering mother's lullabyes
the streets are icy
so is the wind
that carved these lines in my face
and blew my silver hair back
walking down Memory Lane
all the shops that I remember
are decaying, boarded up
the train station I remember filled with dust
the footprints on the boards
echoes of families
together for the holidays

I remember
and I see a glimmer of her eyes
young and clear unlike mine
her sandy hair pinned up
an angel in white
soft and glowing amidst
the soldiers' uniforms
her eyes searching the crowd for me
I call out to her
my voice is only a hollow breeze
cold and silent
as old as the wind
if only this wind could reach her
if only this wind were warm
young and warm
like my time in the south Pacific
writing letters to her
sending valentines and birthday wishes
Christmas cards wrapped in velveteen

Now through the mist I see
the days of youth spinning away from me
the wind falling through the leaves
to settle on my shoulders
and now I'm older but no more wiser
than that clear-faced soldier
that was me
waking up every night since then
expecting to see her eyes
in the dark

Now it's coming on Christmas
I'm sitting here beside the dying fire
I can feel myself falling away
to dream, to slumber
and meet her at the old street corner
I remember
the record player is silent
and the last song I hear
is the winter wind caressing my window
as the last breath tumbles out of my lungs
sweet painted memory fading
like the last leaf of autumn
to mingle with the wind

My first read through was quick because I just kept wanting to read more and more. I was thoroughly captivated and caught up in your moods and memories. I then went back and read it out loud ~ actually it was in more of a whisper. This time I read it slowly and pictured every moment and felt every emotion that you so vividly described.

A beautiful piece of writing from a beautiful you.

Oh Soul Drifter, so enjoyed your poem- The Wind.
The wind carried your memories as a soldier and of life and love. You are definately a song writer. Do you have a cd one can buy.
