Listening to every heart

The Veteran

He took up rifle, musket balls
Took the pledge, answered call
For his land, right or wrong
Stemmed the tide, the day was long

God and Country, black and white
Fought from sunrise into blood’s night
Heard the screams, fell to rise
Wearied soldier of battled cries

~*~

World War I, then II, and more
Traveled far to Korean shore
Every man who lost his life
Left his family, left his wife

Every curse for whom we are
Why?  He had to travel far,
Into countries to help oppressed
To fight a war against protest

~*~

A world caught up in time and tide
Nation’s leaders took a side
Vietnam, oh, what a ride
Time to hear a Veteran’s side

Anger still shakes him deep
Nightmares still proclaim his sleep
He traveled so far to keep
Promises; his country weeps

For those who are lost and gone
His country, who went beyond
Will of men who went along
For a cause they thought was strong

He led teams who went to war
Tell him please, what he fought for
It's not too late to say "Thank You"
for God, Country, our red, white, and blue.

My thanks to all of the Veterans
who served their Country
Now, and then.

Not only would we not have freedom without them, we wouldn't have a country...and maybe we wouldn't even have ourselves. Thank you, Sunny One!

I just returned from our Remembrance Day ceremony in the park, and this actually was so very moving. I read it as the old fighter planes were doing their fly by here.  Beautiful job Sunshine.

Sunshine,

You shed light where sometimes there is none.  Thank you for sharing, for caring and being the hand that wrote what I can't.

PERFECT!

though it doesn't mention the current strife, I'm thinking it was written a while back.

A profoundly moving read!

(Especially the Viet Nam segment)

Whether on the shoal or on the shore,
I'll seek the lighthouse evermore.
