Lost, forlorn and crying,
His sobs brought on my own.
Fire had razed his family's house,
~ The boy had not a home.

He was eight and I was nine,
When we met that day of fate.
My smile drew him to me,
As I stood by garden gate.

His eyes were red and puffy,
Tears flowed like mountain stream.
I asked what was the matter,
He said, “Please wake me from this dream!”

All that he had owned,
Had been burned in the fire.
He lost his bed, toys, and clothes,
~ His life hung by a wire.

He was staying with his grandma,
But missed his friends and home.
His Mom and Dad would call him,
On the telephone.

I said, “Wait there!” and ran upstairs,
To fetch my jar of money.
It was filled with birthday cash,
And coins in a gunny.

I emptied out the contents,
And put them in a sack.
I said that he could buy himself,
Some things that he now lacked.

He put his arms around me,
And kissed me on my cheek.
There was hope in his eyes,
For the future looked less bleak.

I never saw that boy again,
But I think of him some times.
Wondering what became of him,
And how he spent those dimes.

Lost, forlorn and crying,
His sobs brought on my own.
Fire razed his family's house,
~ The boy had not a home.

woven with a heart

the repitition of the 1st in the last a fine ending...a way to grip the heart of the reader with your conclusion

VAS ~

This was a true story. One summer when I was 9 and visiting my grandmother's house, an 8 year old boy walked by crying. When he looked up at me I smiled and he came up the drive to me. He told me how he was staying at his grandmother's house because his house had burned down. I felt such sadness and compassion, that I went and got all the money that I had been saving from little jobs that I would do and my birthday and Christmas money. I will never forget the look on his face when I gave it all to him.

Love & Light,
EA

Linda, this is definitely a tear jerker and heart breaker. Thank goodness you were there to offer a smile to a lost and forlorn little boy!

So you were making points even at eight to be an Angel.

Touching indeed those genuine moments that come naturally to children and like so many birthmarks are erased in life's erosion. I suspect you've had many generous moments and hope you've bathed in good karma.

Marti ~

I will never forget him. Though I can no longer recall his face, I do know that the change in its expression from my simple gesture, had a profound impact on the rest of my life. It truly is better to give than to receive!

Inkedgoddess ~

If I were monetarily wealthy, you would be receiving a cheque in the mail...
