Eventually
this is all one has
of the long strong column
sweating down the road.

The captain in front
with a cane he doesn't need.
Sounds of boots,
their dusty notes in unison.

A short time sergeant
staying out of the sun.

Watching
man by man
marching on

mile by mile
through the tiger hour.

I could see this in my mind's eye, so vividly. Great write.
