Yes," declares the LORD , "I am against the prophets who wag their own tongues and yet declare, 'The LORD declares.'
- Jeremiah 23:30-32

Surfin’ the channels, as we lazy guy’s will do
I’m inclined to stall on panels for the other points of view,
not the gossip or the scandals of the who’s divorcin’ who,
just tryin’ to get a handle on some sources for sum truth

Friday eve with nothing on, I found my thumb was drawn
to gentle genuflection on the “Praise-A-Thon”
knowing the direction the election had gone
and that the seeds they sowed grow to weeds when thrown to Neocons

forget, I said, your swift diagnosis of  ol’ Tammy Fay
and the station you confused for the comedy network everyday
or the squirming, squeamish Swaggert , the farce of Farwell’s fray,
after all I get a kick out of what Zola, Jack Van Impe have to say

piqued, I peeked an hour at the goin’s on,
there’s some freaky winds a blowin’ at those put upon,
just seekin’ some relief,  belief in somethin’ strong,
enough to keep ‘em  rowin’ from the flow of woe ‘n wrong

What I’d seen had me blinkin’ twice
surely next I’m thinkin’, our host Vincent Price
will coast from inky shadows, a ghost device
and with a wink will shrink this awful stink of Heidi Fleiss

Is that Vodoun,  Palo Myombe,
to a santeria thumpin’ that your stumpin’ like a zombie
as you tell us of your visions and the hooves of hell upon me?
(that half an hour drummin’  proved indeed you do alarm me)

In the background, the black-clad undulate
in a ritualistic writhing the possessed would imitate
but only when prescribing to the messages of bait
who are switched from virtues’ longing to the tithes these folks await

all young and perfect, these barbies and kens
slender stage adornments for the camera lense,
spontaneous, combustible,  unique the spirit sends
each whirling dervish frenzy till the telethonin’ ends

I was raised a christian, but it wasn’t quite like that,
this mission wasn’t fishin’ it was fryin’ up the fat
you do the hokie-pokie , toss in a black cat
( a woman wore a purple bouffant ceremonial hat)

Up next, petite and red dress,
this cutey tells us all of how her life was a mess,
her duty, she’ll now confess, to raise a thousand, less
expect not blessin’ for  transgressin’s

then like Kruschev, she takes off her shoe
tells us of the voice that chose what next she better do
of the yard sale, yanking drapes to get the dough
better naked windows than the “Praise-A-Thon” ring low

alternating, between god and fraud
with “god says this” and “god says that,” sounds quite odd
commingled with the carrot of a heaven
she makes us hear as though god sells for seventy-one, twenty-seven

Folks, we’ve been here before
we called ‘em puritanical and that’s the same war,
we threw out the tyrannical and then we all swore
to separate canonical from what’s in Caesar’s store

Dang, you stayed away MUCH too long...
give 'em heck, Robert...

[I would say the other, but you know
how naive I'm supposed to be... ]

LOL< such imagery and thoughts all strung together!

"piqued, I peeked an hour at the goin’s on"
(gotta love that line)

....the hokie-pokie
...."god and fraud"

Quite a write, Richard.

Richard

I've always respected your intelligence ....I'm glad you are not afraid to write what you see and feel...that's the way it should be, and you do it so well!
